Meet Barbara Mitchell

Barbara Mitchell has an extensive background in the Hunter, Jumper and Dressage industries. She founded Heritage Farms in 1975 with partner Danny Foster. She produced many winning Grand Prix horses and successful Hunters. She produced many top Equitation riders. This was also an International Sales Barn.

Some highlights were producing Forever Diamond who with Danny Foster, won the individual Gold and Team Silver Medals at the 1991 PanAmerican Games in Cuba and sending Zeus and Jennifer Foster to the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games where they were the leading Canadian horse.

In 1992, established CornerStone Farms with her husband, John Taylor, in Thornhill, Ontario, with 120 boarded horses, a Full Service A circuit barn for Hunter/Jumper clients and one of the largest riding schools in Ontario with over 400 students per week. Managed 7 Gold Dressage shows each year and organized clinics with International Clinicians.

In 1996, she designed and built a new 32 stall facility in Stouffville, Ontario to accommodate a riding school of over 300 students per week.

Barbara organized the three largest Dressage shows in Canada, hosting the Pan American Games and Olympic Games trials for Canada.

Barbara MitchellBarbara also organized two Gold National Hunter Jumper shows, which were rated the fifth largest shows in Canada.

2015 saw Barbara coordinated and managed the Dressage and Eventing Dressage for the Pan American Games held at the Caledon Equestrian Park in Palgrave, Ontario.

Barbara completed 6 years on the Jump Canada Board of Directors heading up the Athlete and Domestic Development committee. She is on the Jump Canada Rules Committee. She was named Jump Canada Volunteer of the Year for 2010. She is responsible for the highly successful National Talent Squad Series, the Emerging Rider Series and the Hunter Classic Series in Canada.

She has been on the Board of the Ontario Hunter Jumper Association for 10 years and was President for 6 of those years.

Barbara was the 2000 Ontario Equestrian Federation Millenium Award winner and the 1991 Ontario Provincial Government Volunteer of the Year Award for Sports.

In 2018, Barbara was honoured with the Equestrian Canada (EC) Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of her passion for and dedication to equestrianism, which in turn has hugely improved the quality, accessibility, and professionalism of the sport in Canada.

“Barb is an all-around horsewoman,” said Mark Samuel, a former member of the Canadian Show Jumping Team who worked with Mitchell during the foundation of both the OHJA and JC. “She understands the animal, the athlete and the industry, and she has given freely of her expertise throughout her career. We could always count on Barb’s practical nature, strong work ethic and collaborative approach to help produce positive outcomes. She has been a tremendous builder to EC and to the sport.”

“I know of no one else that, for more than four decades, has willingly committed an immeasurable amount of volunteer time to all facets of equestrian sport in Canada,” said Craig Collins, a member of the EC Board of Directors. “Her expertise – in coaching, training, judging, as a clinician, successful business operator, high performance horse owner, member of Board of Directors, Chair or member of dozens of committees – will not be equaled.”

Barbara is a Senior Judge for Hunter, Jumper and Equitation for both Canada and the United States. She is the Lead Clinician for the Hunter/Equitation Judge's Recertification Clinics in Canada.

Barbara MitchellBarbara has been involved with the Equine Canada Coaching Certification program since its inception and is presently a High Performance Examiner. She co-wrote the Level 3 Hunter Jumper Coaching manual and was one of three National Examiners.

Barbara taught grades 9-12 for the York County Board of Education in Aurora, Ontario from 1968-1971 and grades 7-9 for the North York Board of Education from 1965-1968.
